Anaheim, CA – Bao Nguyen released the following statement after House Republican leadership used a parliamentary tactic that made their Members change their votes, shutting down an amendment that would protect the LGBTQ community.
As a gay man myself, I know firsthand how hard it can be to grow up LGBTQ. We face discrimination in so many ways, just because of who we happen to love.
Today in the House, we had a historic chance to end institutionalized discrimination. Many House Republicans were ready to vote for it too, but as we’ve seen before, Republican leadership employed parliamentary tricks and arm-twisting to try and kill equality. But the dream of equality for all will never die.
In Congress, I’ll continue the fight to end discrimination, and I encourage all those who believe in equality to do the same.
Bao Nguyen is the Mayor of Garden Grove, and is running for Congress in California’s 46th Congressional District. He is the first elected openly gay mayor in Orange County.
