FPPC TO INVESTIGATE SUPERVISOR ANDREW DO’S MASS MAILINGS SENT AT PUBLIC EXPENSE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: APRIL 21, 2016
GARDEN GROVE — The California Fair Political Practices Commission announced today that it will investigate a complaint against Orange County First District Supervisor Andrew Do filed by his opponent Garden Grove City Councilmember Phat Bui.
Bui’s complaint asked the FPPC to investigate a series of mass mailings sent at public expense by Andrew Do to residents of the first district that may violate State law prohibiting public officials from sending campaign style mailers to voters using public funds.
In a letter to Councilman Bui, FPPC Enforcement Chief Galena West said, “…the Enforcement Division of the Fair Political Practices Commission will investigate the allegation(s), under jurisdiction of the Commission, of the sworn complaint you submitted in the above-referenced matter.”
A separate Public Records Act request has been made by Bui asking for information on more than 20 such mailers sent by Supervisor Do since January of 2016.
“Supervisor Andrew Do is using the public treasury as his personal campaign slush fund,” said Councilman Phat Bui. “Do is paying six-figure County salaries to campaign workers he described as ‘political hacks’. He is using hundreds of thousands of dollars to distribute campaign style mailings which may violate State law. I am glad the FPPC will investigate these abuses and I hope they put a stop to them,” said Bui.
County Auditor/Controller Eric Woolery initially refused to authorize payments for some of Supervisor Do’s mailings, then backed down under pressure from County Counsel Leon Page.
