I believe that Velarde-Garcia is a Republican. She works for the County of Orange as an Executive Secretary. She is also a notary public. Her ballot title will be “Orange County Executive Aide,” which is not bad. My guess is that Daly will try to challenge that title.
Daly represents the most Latino Assembly district in Orange County – the 69th Assembly District. It is a solidly Democratic seat, with 53% of the voters registered as Democrats. However 52.6% of the voters in the 69th District are Latinos.
The 69th District includes parts of the Cities of Anaheim, Santa Ana, Garden Grove and Orange.
Does Daly have much to worry about? Yes he does. In 2014 two Republican candidates, Sherry Walker (a carpetbagger from Lake Forest) and Santa Ana School Board Member Ceci Iglesias, totaled just under 47% of the vote in the Primary Election.
Daly also has to contend with the angry Latino voters in Anaheim who are trying to take back the Anaheim City Council. These voters won’t look kindly on Daly, who is allied with the City Council’s majority.
Both Daly and the Anaheim City Council’s majority are in cahoots with the Disney Company. Their latest boondoggle is trying to force the taxpayers to pay for an Anaheim Streetcar that will only benefit Disneyland. This after they blew millions of dollars on the failed ARTIC train station.
There are no other challengers in the June Primary which likely means that Daly and Velarde-Garcia will face off again in the November General Election.
Nationally we have seen a huge turnout from Republican voters so far in the Presidential caucuses and primary elections. The Democrats have been showing up in much smaller numbers. While Orange County’s Latino voters often don’t vote you can bet that they will be voting in big numbers in November, to try to stop the GOP’s presumptive candidate, Donald Trump.
Daly can easily raise the money he will need to prevail. However the Democrats were probably hoping to spend that money on other races, particularly Sharon Quirk-Silva’s campaign to take back the Assembly seat she lost a couple years ago to Republican Young Kim.
Daly’s past record is awful. He was considered to be anti-Latino and against the working poor when he was the Mayor of Anaheim. And he made a mess of the O.C. Clerk-Recorder’s office, which was highlighted when he paid Anaheim City Councilman Jordan Brandman, who was then a school board member and consultant, $25K for a report that Brandman was caught copying in large part from Wikipedia.
