Bui is the second Vietnamese challenger to Do to pull papers. The other candidate is an unknown fellow by the name of Robert Bao Nguyen.
Bui’s presence on the June Primary ballot could help the only Democrat in the race, Santa Ana City Councilwoman Michele Martinez, to make it to the General Election in November.
I am not sure why Bui would challenge Do. This could be personal. Do was previously on the Garden Grove City Council himself and Do was also the former Chief of Staff to his immediate predecessor, Janet Nguyen, who has since been elected to the State Senate.
Do is now estranged from his former boss, Nguyen. Could she have encouraged Bui to run as revenge against her onetime ally, Do?
Or could Bui be an ally of former State Legislator Van Tran, who has no love for Do or Nguyen?
Or is Bui just full of himself? As the president of the Vietnamese American Federation of Southern California, perhaps Bui feels he could do a better job than Do?
Reportedly the OC GOP’s leaders are furious with Bui for challenging Do, because he is making things easier for Martinez, a Democrat. And now Do will have to spend money to defend his seat – that is money that the GOP won’t be able to use to defend Assemblywoman Young Kim as she faces off against her predecessor in the Assembly, Sharon Quirk-Silva (D). And the OC GOP will have less money to help the State Senate campaign of Assemblywoman Ling-Ling Chang (R) against former Irvine Mayor Sukhee Kang (D).
If someone finds evidence connecting Bui to Janet Nguyen she is going to live to regret this.
Does Do have anything to worry about? I don’t think so. As the incumbent he has a huge advantage. And he has been a very active Supervisor. He has been a far better Supervisor than Janet Nguyen ever was.
I can’t imagine what Bui is thinking.
