ORANGE COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY PRESS RELEASE
Date: November 16, 2015
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Southern California region of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) honored Orange County District Attorney (OCDA) Tony Rackauckas for the office’s exceptional prosecution of vehicular homicide cases during MADD’s inaugural “Tie One on for Safety” luncheon. The event took place on Nov. 12, 2015, and held at Hotel Maya in Long Beach.
The event celebrated the 35th anniversary of MADD and honored four elected District Attorneys in Southern California with the Pursuit of Justice Award including District Attorney Rackauckas, Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey, San Bernardino County District Attorney Michael Ramos, and Ventura County District Attorney Greg Totten.
During the luncheon, District Attorney Rackauckas was recognized for his efforts pursuing justice for victims of DUI fatalities by creating the first vehicular homicide unit in 2008. Victim Jon Wilhite, who was the sole survivor in the crash that killed Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim pitcher Nick Adenhart and two of his friends in 2009, was also awarded the Honorary Victim Award.
MADD is a nationwide, non-profit organization that works to stop drunken driving, support victims, survivors, and families affected by drunken driving, and prevent underage drinking. The Orange County Chapter of MADD was formed in 1981 and offers services and education to the local community, including youth programs, victim services, and special events. MADD works closely with Orange County law enforcement agencies to support the prosecution and apprehension of those who put the public at risk by driving under the influence of alcohol. The event raised approximately $25,000 to support MADD.
