Republican Leaders McCarthy, Fuller Urge Immediate Action To Prepare For Impending El Niño
Letter To President, Governor Calls On State And Federal Agencies To Capture, Store And Replenish Our Water Supply
SACRAMENTO – Recognizing that an impending El Niño this winter may result in record rainfall, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Bakersfield) and Senate Republican Leader Jean Fuller (R-Bakersfield) joined by their Republican colleagues issued a statement regarding a letter sent earlier today to the president and governor urging action on El Niño preparation. The letter calls on state and federal agencies to take all steps necessary to capture, store and move as much water as possible in the event that El Niño-related precipitation materializes in California this winter.
“This coming winter could present an opportunity to provide our communities that are suffering under record drought conditions with relief. To do so requires the right policies and leadership to be in place. It is imperative our leaders in the Obama and Brown Administrations rise to the occasion and ensure potential El Niño rain benefits all Californians.” – Rep. Kevin McCarthy
“California is currently suffering through one of the worst droughts in the state’s history. But as we just saw last week with the mud slides in Southern California, the state may not be prepared for the forecasted El Niño storms. My colleagues and I joined the congressional delegation from California and signed a letter urging public agencies to begin working now on ensuring that we capture as much of that rainwater as possible, and refill our depleted reservoirs and groundwater supplies. We want to make certain that there is a plan in place to adequately manage and retain this much needed precipitation.” – Sen. Jean Fuller
