REP. LORETTA SANCHEZ QUESTIONS GENERAL CAMPBELL ON AFGHANISTAN STRATEGY
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-46), senior member of the House Armed Services committee, today questioned General John F. Campbell, Commander of Operation Resolute Support and U.S. Forces in Afghanistan, at a full committee hearing entitled “U.S. Strategy in Afghanistan.”
“General, you said in your testimony, ‘I remain concerned about the long-term viability of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces. Succinctly, Afghanistan cannot afford its security forces.’”
Sanchez voiced her concern that 90% of the funds for Afghan National Defense and Security Forces are from the coalition and within that coalition the United States is footing the majority of the bill.
“How much of the majority of the money is used to fund a force that you don’t believe has long-term viability?”
“General, I’ve heard this for 14 years: ‘We’re going to get better, it’s going to be more efficient, we’re getting there,’” Sanchez stated. “The reality is that we’re not.”
Congresswoman Sanchez expressed her frustration with Chairman Mac Thornberry’s assertion that in the last 14 years, there haven’t been any terrorist attacks emerging from Afghanistan.
“I’ll remind the Chairman that instead they went to Somalia, instead they went to Yemen, instead they went to Iraq, instead they went to Syria, instead they went to Libya,” said Sanchez. “So we can say that we’ve concentrated our forces and our money in one place but the reality is, and you and I both know this, they move.”
“So what is the plan for Afghanistan?”
Congresswoman Sanchez’s questions stemmed from her consistent view that the U.S. strategy in Afghanistan has been expensive, dangerous, and unproductive and that we should focus on a more effective global anti-terror strategy,
Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez is proud to represent California’s 46th Congressional District, which includes the cities of Anaheim, Santa Ana, and parts of the cities of Garden Grove and Orange in Orange County.
