Deborah Pauly, a former Villa Park councilwoman and a candidate for state Assembly, was arrested in Anaheim earlier this month for drunken driving, according to a spokesman with the Anaheim Police Department, according to the Voice of OC.
Pauly, a Republican, told the O.C. Register on Monday that personal issues contributed to the DUI incident:
“In the midst of launching my campaign for assembly, in August my husband filed for divorce to end our 32-year marriage,” she said in a written statement. “However, the stresses of this very painful personal circumstance are not an excuse and I take full responsibility for this lapse. This incident is a reminder to stay focused on the campaign and to maintain my high personal standards of conduct and character.
This isn’t the first time a member of the Pauly clan has had a run-in with police involving alcohol. In 2012, Deborah’s husband James tried to evade a police DUI checkpoint in Orange, but instead crashed the car he was driving, also a Porsche, into a curb and was arrested for drunken driving, according to the O.C. Weekly.
During that arrest, James tried to slip off his handcuffs, and Deborah asked to drive the Porsche home, according to the O.C. Weekly. But police refused the request because she appeared to be drunk.
Deborah has been accused of being anti-Muslim after being caught making questionable remarks outside an Islamic charity event held at a mosque in Yorba Linda a few years ago. Pauly said, “I know quite a few Marines who would be very happy to help these terrorists to an early meeting in paradise,” and that what was happening inside the mosque was “pure, unadulterated evil.”
Pauly is a Tea Party favorite who was beaten badly by Todd Spitzer when they both ran for the O.C. Board of Supervisors in 2012. Spitzer got over 68% of the vote, according to Smart Voter.
Other candidates include former Anaheim Councilman Harry Sidhu, who is part of former Anaheim Mayor and current lobbyist Curt Pringle’s cabal, and Irvine Mayor Steven Choi. Sidhu has been in hot water in other races when he was accused of carpetbagging.
The 68th Assembly District includes these cities/areas:
- Anaheim – 21.6%
- Irvine – 34.0%
- Lake Forest
- Marine Corps Air Station El Toro
- Orange – 92.6%
- North Tustin
- Villa Park
43.44% of the voters in the 68th Assembly District are registered as Republicans. Only 28.43% of the voters are registered Democrats. Just over 23% are either Decline to State voters. In California’s Open Primary electoral system it is very possible that two Republicans will emerge from the Primary and face off in the General Election. We are not aware of any Democrats running for this seat.
