REP. LORETTA SANCHEZ CONGRATULATES FIRST WOMEN GRADUATING U.S. ARMY RANGER SCHOOL
WASHINGTON, D.C. –Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-46), the second ranked Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee and the founder and chair of the Women in the Military Caucus today released the following statement:
“I congratulate First Lt. Kristen Griest and First Lt. Shaye Haver, who today will become the first women ever to graduate from the Army’s elite Ranger School. I also applaud the news that the Navy is planning to open its SEAL teams to qualified women who can pass the legendary and grueling training.
“However, despite this historic milestone, Lieutenant Griest and Lieutenant Haver still won’t be allowed to try out for the 75th Ranger Regiment or direct combat roles. I strongly believe in giving our service women the privilege and official recognition of serving their country in direct combat.
“For too long women have been excluded from combat roles, and as a consequence female soldiers have not been provided the same opportunities deterring women from advancing up the chain of command. In reality, women have already been participating in dangerous combat and on the battlefield for years and they deserve to be officially recognized and supported.
“As the highest ranking woman on the House Armed Services committee, I have fought to make military service a stronger working environment and career option for female service members who serve our nation with bravery and honor. In 2011 I introduced H.R. 1928, the Women’s Fair and Equal Right to Military Service Act, ground breaking legislation which would allow qualified female soldiers in our military to fight in combat
“I hope all services will expand all combat roles to any qualified women who demonstrate their ability to meet the required performance standards. This historic change is long overdue and we still have a long road ahead of us.
“Opening up all roles to women will ultimately strengthen the military and our nation.”
Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez is proud to represent California’s 46th Congressional District, which includes the cities of Anaheim, Santa Ana, and parts of the cities of Garden Grove and Orange in Orange County. She serves as Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Tactical Air and Land Forces and as the second ranked Democrat on the Committee on Homeland Security.
