The Caltrans Record: Spending 4.7 Times The National Average
FACT: California spends 4.7 times as much per-mile of state controlled highway as the national average.
- For every $1 Texas spends, California spends $5.80.
- For every $1 Michigan spends, California spends $3.
FACT: For every mile of highway it controls, California spends approximately $77,000 on administration costs.
FACT: The Legislative Analyst’s Office (LAO) report found that 60% of Capital Outlay projects sampled overestimated staffing needs by more than 25%.
FACT: Approximately 54% of Caltrans’ workforce were within 3 years of retirement as of March 2014.
With Caltrans expecting major staffing turnover in the next 3 years, increasing flexibility over contracting is the REASONABLE APPROACH to fixing our roads and saving Californians’ money.
