Statement by Assemblywoman Young Kim on Decision to Uphold Parent Trigger Petition for Palm Lane Elementary
SACRAMENTO – Assemblywoman Young Kim issued the following statement in response to a court decision to uphold the Parent Trigger Petition submitted by Palm Lane Elementary parents seeking to transform their children’s school.
“I agree with the judge’s conclusion that, ‘No clearer repudiation of a school district’s performance could be imagined.’ This ruling is a great decision for the parents and students of Palm Lane Elementary School. I commend those parents who demanded a positive change in their child’s education. Every child in California deserves the opportunity to have a quality education. Underperforming schools hurt our children and their future. It is important that parents have the right to fight for real change when their school is not performing. As a result of this ruling, I am confident that Palm Lane students will finally have a chance to receive the great education that they deserve.”
On January 14th, Assemblywoman Kim joined parents at Palm Lane Elementary School in Anaheim as they officially filed petitions to “trigger” a restart of their school. Initially, the petition was rejected by the Anaheim City School District. But the Orange County Superior Court ruled that the school district illegally disqualified the parent petition. In order to combat a rejected petition, Assemblywoman Kim proposed Assembly Bill 734, which would have provided parents a second appeal process.
