REP. LORETTA SANCHEZ STATEMENT ON IRAN-P5+1 NUCLEAR AGREEMENT
WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-46), senior member of the House Armed Services Committee and Ranking Member of the Tactical Air and Land Forces Subcommittee, today released the following statement after President Obama announced that the negotiators of the P5+1 nations have reached a nuclear agreement with Iran:
“The announcement of this proposed deal is a positive sign that the United States and Iran can engage in negotiations despite a volatile history. I recognize it is a historic moment that these two countries have come to the negotiating table and made it this far.
“However, I continue to have skepticism about Iran’s intentions. I appreciate that this deal relies on verification, not trust; however it is critical that this deal is actually effective. Sanctions have been our most effective tool, and we must be cautious and not rush to repeal all sanctions.
“I remain extremely concerned that inspectors will not have ‘anytime, anywhere’ access to Iran’s nuclear programs. We must avoid, at all costs, agreeing to a deal we find partly acceptable and instead carefully decide whether this deal will help or hinder our ultimate objective of eliminating Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
“I look forward to closely reviewing the details of this deal and working with my colleagues to ensure that Iran is held accountable.”
Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez is proud to represent California’s 46th Congressional District, which includes the cities of Anaheim, Santa Ana, and parts of the cities of Garden Grove and Orange in Orange County. She serves as Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Tactical Air and Land Forces and the second ranked Democrat on the Committee on Homeland Security.
