My discussion with Issa about San Onofre
Tonight I was called (by a computer) to participate in a Darrell Issa electronic Town Hall meeting. The way it works is that he talks constantly at length and you can call in a question, first screened by a staff member. I was put in a line for about 30 min listening to questions and his answers, mostly softball questions from his conservative base. On one question about the Middle East, he said that we don’t know if Israel has any nuclear weapons (it has been known for decades that they have at least 500).
I finally got recognized and told him that the number one issue in his district was San Onofre becoming a nuclear waste dump indefinitely, a huge public danger with 2000 tons of waste in a tsunami quake zone. I further said that Yucca was rejected by the DOE as not having enough room and by scientists because of deep water penetration, and he has done nothing to help get this waste moved. Then he cut me off and went on and on but I could not interject or answer or debate. All one sided.
His basic points were:
1. I was wrong about SO being either a tsunami zone or in an earthquake fault zone. It was neither.
2. The casks are safe because they have been there for many years with no problems.
3. He has been actively engaged because he has advocated Yucca Mt as a solution. He said it is completely safe and it is Harry Reid who is causing the problem by keeping it closed. Yucca Mt is the solution.
End of one-sided “discussion.” Next question. He did not address my points.
I wonder how many of you are willing to call or write to his office saying your heard his town hall discussion on April Fools day about 6:45. If anyone can go to his website and find a recording, please share. It would be a good time to flood him over his lack of understanding of the issues and his his lack of action and what is probably the most important problem in his district.
If you go to his website and click on the News Room, then search for the phrase “San Onofre.” There are zero results.
