PAULY’S PICKS: Tuesday, March 17 Special Election to fill 37th Senate Seat
By: Deborah Pauly
There is only one race on your ballot for the Special Election on March 17 to fill California’s 37th Senate District seat vacated by Mimi Walters when she was elected to Congress.
My recommendation is JOHN MOORLACH.
Here’s why. We need to elect men and women of honor, integrity and honesty at all levels of government. John Moorlach fills that bill. He’s a CPA. Did you know we don’t have a single CPA in the state legislature? That explains a lot, doesn’t it? We need an army of CPAs, but we’ll have to settle for this one for now. (Wagner is an attorney. We have PLENTY of those!) Moorlach predicted the OC bankruptcy in the mid-90s. He was made fun of, discredited and called “chicken little,” at that time — but he stood his ground in declaring that the Treasurer/Tax Collector was playing fast and loose with the taxpayer’s money. Six months later, OC experienced the largest municipal bankruptcy in US history. Moorlach ably led us out of it. Cleaned up the OC Treasurer’s Department and instituted investment policies that didn’t put the taxpayers’ dollars at unnecessary risk.
His motivations are pure. He serves for the right reasons…not for his own glory or wealth creation. He is a rock solid Christian who walks the walk. All of his campaign contributions come from individuals WITHIN the district. By comparison, Wagner has accepted union money, even though he promised the Lincoln Club that he would not. In fact, separate from those donations, the unions and other special interest groups have spent $200,000 on independent expenditures to spread lies about John Moorlach, so they can get Don Wagner elected. Much of Don’s money comes from Sacramento: unions, special interests and lobbyists. (Full disclosure: I supported Don Wagner when he first ran for the Assembly in 2010. I felt he was the best of the candidates that were running. I think Mr. Wagner should stay where he is and finish his third term as our Assemblyman for the 68th District. He just won re-election in November 2014.)
It is disappointing to see so many of the entrenched establishment Republicans circling the wagons around Wagner. We, the People, need to bust up this “you-scratch-my-back-I’ll-scratch-your-back” cabal of “go-along-get-along” cronies.
Mr. Moorlach does have an impressive list of endorsements, including the Orange County Register, the California Republican Assembly, Congressman Tom McClintock, Supervisor Shawn Nelson and Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait. The Tea Party — and other independent thinkers — are supporting Moorlach because he just scares the crap out of the establishment. I think I like that in an elected official.
