A new candidate has filed to run in the Special Election for the 37th State Senate District, which is set for March 17, 2015. Her name is Naz Namazi. She is a realtor from Mission Viejo according to her Facebook page.
Her Linkedin page tells another story. Apparently she was U.S. Representative Dana Rohrabacher’s Deputy Campaign Manager from 2012 – 2014.
Namazi is also Persian. We had two Persian Republicans on the ballot last year in Orange County.
Lake Forest Councilman Adam Nick ran, inexplicably, against U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez. Predictably she destroyed him in November. Nick’s bizarre wife, Sherry Walker, also ran in central Orange County, losing badly to Assemblyman Tom Daly in the 69th Assembly District. Both Nick and Walker changed their Persian names – but Namazi apparently is running with her real name intact.
Namazi is also a creative – in fact she has her own IMDB page. She is listed on her Linkedin page as a documentary filmmaker. She appears to be a talented photographer too, judging from her Instagram page.
She knows Wagner as in 2013 he joined “Rhonda Rohrabacher in presenting the Anna Woods Memorial HQ Volunteer of the Year Award to Namazi for her efforts at the OCGOP HQ and in Huntington Beach,” according to the OC Political Blog.
While Wagner has the support of U.S. Representatives Ed Royce and Mimi Walters he does not list Rohrabacher as a supporter, on his website.
Moorlach doesn’t list Rohrabacher as a supporter either but he does have the backing of Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait. Last year Wagner stupidly endorsed Anaheim Councilwoman Lucille Kring when she challenged Tait, who beat her easily in the November General Election. Now Tait is getting his revenge.
So what to make of Namazi’s campaign? I don’t know if she is going to buy a candidate’s statement but if she doesn’t it will be hard to take her seriously. Her past work with Rohrabacher should help her to raise money – and there is a lot of money in the Orange County Persian community.
If no Democrat jumps into this race it may be that the Democrats in the district will opt to vote for Nemazi instead of Wagner, who is a social conservative, or Moorlach, who is also pretty conservative. And if Nemazi remains the only woman in the race she will have a monopoly on women voters.
At this point, with three Republicans in the race, the O.C. Democrats would be stupid not to run someone for the 37th State Senate District.
