Prop 47 will downgrade many less serious crimes from felonies to misdemeanors, thereby reducing the number of people incarcerated in California’s prisons and jails. In particular, it reduces the penalty for possession of most drugs for personal use from felonies to misdemeanors, according to the Libertarian Party of California.
Locking up people in prisons for less time for victimless crimes is a good start toward ending the drug war—and freeing up the criminal justice system to focus on violent crimes. The LPCA prefers the savings of not incarcerating those who commit nonviolent crimes go back to the taxpayers in the form of reduced taxes, rather than other government programs; however, focusing on violent crime with real victims is a more important issue.
If you look at who is opposing Prop 47 you will find it is mostly law enforcement unions. God forbid we cost them any union jobs!
The measure’s proponents say the money not wasted on prisons will be spent on education. Well perhaps they can keep a few kids from ending up in the hole by focusing on education instead of incarceration.
Vote yes on Prop. 47.
