Why in the world did the OC Democrats decide to launch their big November General Election kickoff in Long Beach today? Democratic candidate Sharon Quirk-Silva and Jose Solorio headlined the event. Solorio is running for the 34th State Senate District, which now includes a sliver of Long Beach (see the map below) and Quirk-Silva is trying desperately to hang on to the 65th Assembly District, which is in north Orange County, many miles from Long Beach.
Both Solorio and Quirk-Silva came in second place in the June Primary Election. Because of the Top Two rules they advanced to the November General Election but they were weakened greatly while their opponents, Young Kim and Janet Nguyen picked up major momentum by garnering more votes that their Democratic counterparts.
Solorio hired Sacramento labor consultant Richie Ross to run his campaign. Ross clearly has no clue about Orange County. I am not sure who is running Quirk-Silva’s campaign but they must suck too if they thought that wasting her time in Long Beach was a good idea.
Voter turnout was very low in June – particularly among the Latino voters that both Solori0 and Quirk-Silva are counting on. I can’t imagine that Governor Jerry Brown will, as the top Democrat on the November ballot, compel a great turnout in the General Election. The Democrats consider him an automatic win so many of them won’t vote in November. That could doom down-ticket candidates like Quirk-Silva and Solorio.
To make matters worse, the GOP base is pretty ticked off and they will definitely be voting in November. This might be the Republican Party’s last hurrah for awhile as Latino voters will eventually hand the Democrats a firm majority in several states that are currently red.
Solorio has yet to start hitting Nguyen for her destruction of CalOptima. And Quirk-Silva ill-advisedly voted very liberal since she was elected in the 65th Assembly District in 2013. That voting record will now give Kim plenty of fodder for her campaign mailers.
If these OC Democrats want to win in November they better stop wasting their time in Long Beach and get busy in the heart of their respective districts.
