Huff Legislation Designates June 2014 as Education Equality Month
Resolution Honors Historic Vergara Ruling; To Be Heard This Week
SACRAMENTO: Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff (R-Diamond Bar) has authored legislation to honor the recent Los Angeles Superior Court Case ruling Vergara vs. California. The ruling determined that California’s system governing teacher tenure, dismissal, and seniority unconstitutionally deprives students an equal education opportunity. Senate Resolution 57 reaffirms the right of every California student, no matter their background, to receive an equal and quality education and designates the month of June 2014 as Education Equality Month.
“Education equality is a civil rights issue and a moral issue,” said Senator Huff. “We must do whatever we can to promote education equality, and honoring this historic ruling is not only a step in the right direction, it shows that the legislature is willing to start addressing the systemic inequality of our current public school system.“
The Los Angeles County Superior Court’s ruling is tentative. However, Judge Treu made it clear that California’s current tenure and seniority laws are unconstitutional, adding that the evidence “truly shocks the conscience.” Senator Huff’s resolution calls on the California Legislature to enact laws which appropriately recognize and respond to the Vergara vs. California ruling.
“The worst thing we can do is remain silent on this issue,” added Senator Huff. “The quality of our children’s education, and therefore the quality of their life is at stake.”
Senator Huff recently sent a letter to Governor Brown on behalf of the Senate Republican Caucus urging him not to appeal the recent court ruling. For a copy of the letter, click here.
SR 57 is expected to be heard this week in the Senate Education Committee and if approved will be sent to the Senate Floor for approval.
