Expected to open by year-end (we can’t wait for the tax-funded party), Mayor-for-Hire Curt Pringle‘s Glass Barn actually attracted its first commercial tenant this summer. In a place he and Chief Minion, Anaheim Public Works Director Natalie “Natty” Meeks expect to be overrun by commuters and Disneyland guests, an unheard of coffee house with all of one other store in Newport Beach took out a lease for one expensive kiosk per this outside-the-paywall Art Marroquin story in the OC Register story dated yesterday:
City officials on Thursday touted that Lost Bean Organic Coffee and Tea is the first company to agree to rent a kiosk inside ARTIC. The shop signed a 10-year lease and will pay $5,332 a month.
No other money’s been committed to any other commercial enterprises in the Barn. And no Disney money was harmed by this Boondoggle. Anaheim has been seeking retail tenants for ARTIC for years. We’d think Starbucks would JUMP at the opportunity to drop a store in a high-traffic 24/7 location that ARTIC’s supposed to be.
According to Supervisor Shawn Nelson’s office, the perfectly adequate Anaheim train station in his District that ARTIC replaces accommodates all of 150 boardings per day, making it only the third busiest transit portal in Orange County behind Fullerton and Irvine.
Meeks’ comments to reporters on HER accomplishment in social engineering with $200 million of Measure M funds and OPM are priceless:
“It’s always been my objective to introduce transit to a whole new group of people,
and not to just build something like this for people who are already using transit,” Natalie Meeks…said Thursday afternoon as she led reporters on a tour of the future transit station. “This is a building, a facility, where you think, ‘Yes, I would love to come here every day and I want to use transit,’” Meeks said. “It’s a really innovative project….We can turn on orange lights when the Ducks are playing or red lights when the Angels play or just about any other color to match the season or event,” Meeks said.
Maybe her light show will also shine on the promised Bullet Train:
