Supervisors Adopt Supervisor Spitzer’s Proposal for an Ordinance Prohibiting Signature Solicitation for Candidate Nomination Papers from County Employees
By: Todd Spitzer – Supervisor Third District
The Board of Supervisors (4-1; Moorlach voting no) approved Supervisor Spitzer’s ordinance this week with the passage of the second reading for a new ordinance that bans circulating nomination papers to Orange County employees while they are at work.
“I want this ordinance to send a strong message of two things: Number one, don’t engage in political conduct on county property. You’re more than likely to end up in trouble,” Spitzer said. “Number two; don’t wait until the last minute to get your signatures.”
The ordinance simply requires, “No person may solicit for the nomination paper for any local, state, or federal office the signature of any County employee at his or her workplace.” The ordinance takes effect on August 21, 30 days later after Board approval.
