Assemblyman Travis Allen Gives Parents and Charter Schools a Voice in California’s Education System
AB 2408 will place a parent and a charter school representative on the Commission that determines our children’s education opportunities
SACRAMENTO – Assemblyman Travis Allen’s (R-Huntington Beach) Assembly Bill 2408, which would add a representative of California’s charter schools and a parent of a California student to the California Collaborative for Education Excellence unanimously passed out of the Committee on Education.
“Currently, every aspect of our children’s education has been afforded representation on the Collaborative, except for charter schools and parents. Given the fact that parent involvement is one of the 8 goals of California’s educational system, as articulated in state law, a change to the Collaborative is warranted,” said Assemblyman Travis Allen. “Providing a voice on the Collaborative for parents and charter schools will increase the quality of education that our students receive throughout California.”
The California Education Code establishes the California Collaborative for Education Excellence. The mission of this collaborative is to advise and assist school districts, county superintendents of schools, and charter schools in achieving their goals, and to provide oversight and accountability for all public schools to meet the state standards articulated in statute.
“In order to address the academic needs of California’s students, every aspect of the California education system must be represented – not just the narrow focus of special interests that may not understand the unique needs of the children attending a charter school or are indifferent to meaningful parental involvement. Moving this legislation forward gives a voice to every party responsible for the education of California’s children.” said Assemblyman Travis Allen.
