Protesters marched in front of the White House in an effort to keep raising awareness about the deportation of illegal immigrants. Chanting “Not One More,” protesters held up handmade signs painted with President Obama’s face and the words “Deporter in Chief. 2 Millones,” a reference to an estimated two million immigrants deported under the Obama administration, according to Andrew Elfenbein at the Guardian Liberty Voice.
Over 40 separate rallies were held around the country, organized by the National Day Labor Organizing Network, and timed to coincide with the estimated millstone of two million deportations. Money allocated for enforcement has continued its twenty year rise, and a study by the Migration Policy Institute found the US was spending more money defending the borders and rounding up immigrants in the interior than the country was spending on all major federal law enforcement agencies combined.
Now Obama’s administration is even moving to deport schoolteachers who came to this country under a Federal program that granted them H-1B visas. All was well until a number of school districts in California and Texas blew it and failed to correctly process the visa renewal applications.
Lilian Velazquez Acosta said she lost her teaching position and a chance at becoming an American citizen because officials at Twin Rivers Unified School District failed to send a letter to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services acknowledging she worked for them. She learned too late that the misstep caused her work visa to expire in September 2012, according to the Sacramento Bee.
A few years ago, a school district in Texas found itself with a booming immigrant population and few teachers who spoke Spanish. So they started an ambitious recruitment program that brought in 260 teachers – from Colombia, Mexico and Venezuela – to meet their growing demand. Now, about six years later, 23 of those teachers are facing deportation after the Garland Independent School District apparently bungled their temporary work visas, or H-1B. Federal authorities are investigating the school district over the blunder and an administrator, teacher and associate superintendent have been placed on leave, according to Fox News.
Latinos voted for President Barack Obama over Republican Mitt Romney by 71% to 27%, according to an analysis of exit polls by the Pew Hispanic Center, a Project of the Pew Research Center.
Can you blame them? Romney said his plan for immigration was for unlicensed immigrants to deport themselves! He must have forgotten that “In 1885, Romney’s great-grandfather, Miles Park Romney, fled to Mexico to escape America’s anti-polygamy laws. Along with a group of his fellow Mormons, Miles Park Romney, who had four wives and 30 children, settled in Chihuahua, Mexico, where polygamy was still legal,” according to ABC.
Obama had a chance to reform immigration when he was first elected in 2008. His party, the Democrats, held both houses of the Congress for two years until the GOP took the House in 2010. Obama and the Democrats did NOTHING to reform immigration. Instead Obama started mass deportations – and today he has deported more immigrants than any other previous President.
Can Latino voters possibly overlook this when Hillary Clinton, whose husband Bill was also unfriendly to immigrants, asks for their vote in 2016? Remember that “As part of a 1996 initiative to curb illegal immigration, President Bill Clinton signed the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRIRA) on September 30, 1996. Appointed by Clinton, the U.S. Commission on Immigration Reform recommended reducing legal immigration from about 800,000 people a year to about 550,000,” according to Wikipedia.
The problem of course is that Latinos have precious few reasons to support the Republicans, who constantly bash immigrants.
It is ironic that President Abe Lincoln delivered the black vote to the GOP and President Ronald Reagan delivered the Latino vote to the GOP, but both Latinos and American blacks now vote strictly for the Democrats because Republicans consistently act like and sound like racists.
Two smaller parties, the Green Party and the Libertarian Party, should be far more popular with Latinos but neither of these parties has the resources to compete with the red and blue parties.
Regardless Latino voters should punish the Democrats for Obama’s deportation record. Clinton may pay the price for Obama’s immigration fail.
