The Republican Party of Orange County endorsed OC Clerk-Recorder Hugh Nguyen tonight but the vote was not unanimous. One guy held out – and wait til you see why he chose not to endorse Nguyen.
Several speakers got up and said nice things about Nguyen. The funny line of the night came when OC Supervisor Todd Spitzer spoke about the Clerk-Recorder’s job filing important documents and one candidate’s failure to properly file candidate documents – an obvious rip of Troy Edgar, the Los Alamitos Councilman who got busted for trying to collect nomination signatures so he could run against Nguyen. Edgar’s political consultant, Brett Barbre, was caught soliciting signatures within the OC Voter Registrar’s office after the doors had been shut.
Everyone said Nguyen has done a great job cleaning up the mess that Daly left behind. But Newport Beach City Council candidate Scott Peotter got up and said that it is optional for the OC Clerk-Recorder’s office to perform marriage ceremonies. Peotter said the Clerk-Recorder can either perform all marriages (both same-sex and opposite-sex) or perform no marriages. (Source: OC Political blog)
Imagine that. Peotter is from the rich community of Newport Beach. He said he rather that NO ONE get married at the OC Clerk-Recorder’s office as, gasp! a gay couple might seek to get married.
Now the fact is that getting married is very costly. But if you get married at the OC Clerk-Recorder’s office, the cost of the wedding is only $28.
But gay-bashing Peotter would rather that NO ONE get married. He would rather that folks live in sin than get married if that will keep the dreaded gay couples from tying the knot.
I can’t imagine that there are many people in Newport Beach who would appreciate Peotter’s stance on gay marriage and I can only hope that this will haunt him in his Council race.
