Everyone in Orange County’s political circles is having a hearty laugh at the expense of Los Alamitos Councilman Troy Edgar and his trusted sidekick Brett Barbre, who showed up at the offices of the Orange County Registrar of Voters last Friday and kept on collecting nomination signatures, for the OC Clerk-Recorder election, after 5 pm.
Of course you are not allowed to collect nomination signatures after the doors of the Registrar of Voters are closed at the 5 pm deadline. But that is what Barbre did and he got caught on video doing it. So Neal Kelley, the Registrar of Voters, invalidated Edgar’s nomination paperwork.
Well as you might have figured, Barbre is crying a river over the invalidation of Edgar’s paperwork. Barbre told the Voice of OC that Edgar and his supporters arrived at the office at just after 4 p.m. and were working on their nomination papers. But because of backlogs at the registrar’s office in handling candidates, it can take more than an hour, Barbre said. That’s why they were still working on their nomination papers after 5 p.m., he argued.
OC Supervisor Todd Spitzer got in the last word when he rebutted Barbre in a comment he left at the Voice of OC: It’s unfortunate that Brett Barbre is embarrassed that his client, Troy Edgar, didn’t qualify for the ballot. The 5 p.m. deadline is clearly spelled out in the Elections Code, and that’s why the Registrar locks its doors. Perhaps the reason he’s “never had a Registrar say you can’t be signing nomination papers after five” is because there’s never been a candidate circulating nomination papers after the 5 p.m. deadline set in the Elections Code. Most smart candidates don’t wait until the final moment to qualify.
So why in the world was Barbre so desperate to get Edgar on the ballot? Well you might recall that Barbre used to be a consultant to the corrupt former OC Clerk-Recorder, Tom Daly. And that relationship merited Barbre a ton of money for almost no work! Consider that Daly “paid almost $50,00 in 2008 and 2009 to Barbre, who was one of his campaign contributors, to “study” the feasibility of developing an Orange County athletic “hall of fame,” according to the Friends of Fullerton’s Future blog.
No wonder Barbre wanted to get his boy Edgar elected to the office of OC Clerk-Recorder! Imagine what Barbre would have been paid for next?
Well the good news is that Barbre blew it and now Edgar’s reputation, which was already putrid, is even more destroyed. It is a matter of time before the people of Los Alamitos get rid of Edgar altogether.
We might have dodged a big bullet with this fiasco. Spitzer summed it up neatly when he wrote, “The fact that Troy Edgar waited until the deadline and couldn’t cross his t’s and dot his i’s for his candidacy paperwork makes me think that he probably doesn’t have the organizational skills to be running the Clerk-Recorder’s office.”
