The OC CRA, a Republican grassroots organization, endorsed Michelle Steel, a member of the Board of Equalization, over Assemblyman Allan Mansoor, for the 2nd District of the Orange County Board of Supervisors at their endorsing convention on Saturday.
You might be tempted to discount Allan Mansoor’s campaign. He is running against several Republicans (and one Democrat) and Steel has raised almost half a million dollars, including a loan of $100K.
But Mansoor just doesn’t ever lose. And he has won several elections in the very district he is running for while Steel is not known to the voters in Orange County. She has to raise a fortune just to introduce herself.
Worse for Steel she might be able to pick up votes from the Asian community in the OC but her last name blows that. But some folks know who she is – the Republicans in Irvine who remember that she supported an Agranista, Sukhee Kang, for Mayor a few years ago, in 2010.
Mansoor has the support of Costa Mesa Mayor Jim Righeimer and Huntington Beach Mayor Matthew Harper.
Steel’s supporters include heavyweight political insiders including divorcing Orange County power couple Mike and Susan Schroeder, lobbyists Lyle Overby and Roger Faubel as well as ambulance and trash companies that rely on lucrative government contracts, according to R. Scott Moxley at the OC Weekly.
Moxley surmises that the Schroeders are backing Steel because it is possible that OCDA Tony Rackauckas will retire in the next couple of years and name Susan Schroeder as his successor. She will need the Supervisors to appoint her and can count on Steel’s support. Mansoor, a former OC Deputy Sheriff, most likely would not back her.
Moxley also reported that Mansoor has raised $39,000 from real estate developers, conservative activists, a pawnshop association, Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians and Poseidon Water, LLC.
