Termed out OC Supervisor John Moorlach failed to pick up the endorsement of the California Republican Assembly (CRA) which held an endorsing convention yesterday in Buena Park.
The good news for Moorlach, who is facing off against several Republican candidates including State Senator Mimi Walters, for the 45th Congressional District, is that no one else got the CRA endorsement either.
The CRA ended up voting to endorse Walters, by a margin of 14-9, on their final vote, but that was not a large enough margin to hand Walters their endorsement.
Does any of this matter? Add 14 to 9 and you get 23. Do the thoughts of 23 Republicans, from all over the OC, really add up to anything? Not really but this is somewhat of a victory for Moorlach as it would have been tough to swallow watching this small band of Republicans back his opponent – particularly when Walters is guilty of having voted to pass a car tax. She supported an Assembly bill to that effect only to vote against the resulting Senate bill later.
Moorlach is the guy who predicted the OC bankruptcy a few years ago. A Democrat OC Treasurer named Bob Citron made some crazy investments and the Republicans on the OC Board of Supervisors were asleep at the wheel. We are still paying for that mess.
Moorlach disappointed me when he backed disgraced OC Sheriff Mike Carona – but just about all the OC Republicans were guilty of that. I was a Republican at the time and I recall that Tim Whitacre was one of only a few brave Republicans who joined me in attacking the notion of endorsing Carona at the OC GOP Central Committee. Others who backed Carona included Chris Norby, Matt Harper, etc. It was disgusting.
But that was a long time ago and now we are faced with an opportunity to replace Congressman John Campbell, who has been a bit of a squish on fiscal matters, with a strong fiscal conservative in Moorlach. Why would anyone vote for Walters instead? That just doesn’t compute.
