Republican San Diego Councilman Kevin Faulconer defeated a Democratic colleague, David Alvarez in a special election that was set after the previous Mayor, Bob Filner, resigned.
Filner, a lifelong Democrat, quit after his terrible behavior against women came to light.
The same labor unions that backed Filner also supported Alvarez.
Faulconer got 54.5% of the vote. His victory in what has become a Democratic city gives hope to the embattled California Republican Party.
This victory could foreshadow more losses for the Democrats in the upcoming Mid-Term elections. The failure of Obamacare and the ongoing lack of jobs could doom the Democrats this year.
