Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff Announces Support for Teacher Tenure Lawsuit
Says tenure system ‘limits education equality’
SACRAMENTO: Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff (R-Diamond Bar) today announced his support for the group of nine Los Angeles Unified School District students who are challenging California’s teacher tenure law and “Last In, First Out” (LIFO) policies in Los Angeles Superior Court.
The students are opposed to California’s current quality-blind tenure system, which keeps under-performing teachers in the classroom.
“I’m proud of these students and their parents for taking their future into their own hands by challenging a system that prevents California from achieving education equality,” says Senate Republican Leader Bob Huff. “The current system does not reflect the best interest of students.”
Senator Huff authored legislation last year (SB 453), which would have allowed school districts to stop making staff decisions simply based on a teachers date of hire – commonly known as LIFO. School districts would have been allowed to make staffing decisions based on how to best educate students, but the bill was killed in Senate Education Committee on a party line vote
“Teachers are the most important resource in a child’s education,” said Senator Huff. “Even a single year of poor teaching can set back a child’s educational progress for years, and even hinder their entire education. Something has to change.”
Senator Huff serves as the Senate Republican Leader and represents the 29th Senate District covering portions of Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino Counties. Follow Senator Huff on Twitter @bobhuff99.
