For all the animosity and heartburn the OC Transportation Authority is causing with trying to
toll tax the 405 between Costa Mesa and Long Beach, here’s an even bigger outrage. Per Kevin Sablan at the Register today:
The market for yellow cabs in Orange County is apparently so crowded that new taxi companies are banned from using the popular color in their fleets – and the word in their business names.
The policy, temporarily implemented last year, was recently renewed after a year of study. It stems from major cab operators that have long branded themselves with the bright hue complaining about a growing number of competitors imitating their name and look, said Patrick Sampson, administrator of Orange County Taxi Administration Program. The agency’s steering committee, made up of city officials and industry reps, approved the prohibition.
Those advocating for the ban say the proliferation of yellow, in color and name, prompted consumer confusion as company’s identities and ownerships blended together. Roughly 87 percent of permitted taxis in Orange County have yellow in their color scheme, the taxi administration reported.
How childish and how big-brotherish, but how typical of a government Agency that’s out of control. It’s time the OCTA Board provide some adult supervision over this nonsense (which could even be made into a Free Speech argument) and let taxi operators paint their cabs whatever color they damn well please.
If the Board that’s chosen by political insiders doesn’t act on rescinding this invasion into private businesses, it’s time to ELECT the OCTA Board, and Stop the political appointments!
