The elected Democrats in the City of Huntington Beach had a cow over the legal fireworks on the 4th of July and are now losing it over a daytime music festival called “Wet Electric” that has been set for September 14, 2013, at the Huntington Beach State Beach.
Councilman Joe Shaw, a Democrat and gay activist, declared war on the event on his Facebook page, writing “The city of Huntington Beach is now suing the state over the “wet electric” drug event the state is allowing on the beach. I really wish the state would work with us on this and find events that are better suited to a state beach. Just this past week, a 3-day “electric” event held in NYC had the last day cancelled due to two drug overdoses. It makes me angry that the state will host a drug and booze fueled event because of the need for money.”
“We don’t want 8,000 drunk people partying on our beach. We’re very concerned about what happens when the party is over. People have been drinking all day, and they’re driving out on our streets and out onto the 405 Freeway,” said Huntington Beach Mayor Connie Boardman, according to KABC News.
But despite Boardman’s histrionics, the event organizer says Wet Electric is open only to those 21 and older with a ticket. It starts at noon and ends by 9 p.m.
It is ironic that Boardman and Shaw oppose this beach event when they always support the Orange County gay pride festival – O.C. Pride. That event is held in downtown Santa Ana and it features, of course, tons of booze. Why is it OK for gay folks to get wasted in Santa Ana but not OK for a non-gay event to be held in Huntington Beach?
The Wet Electric promoter, Steve Thatcher, of Premiere Media Group, says that “It’s just completely different. We’re also working with Yellow Cab, buses, shuttle companies, local hotels. We take a lot of safety precautions.”
In August, City Atty. Jennifer McGrath, another Democrat, sent the Wet Electric event promoter a letter requesting that the promoter cancel the event because the company’s permit did not abide by the city’s zoning and subdivision ordinance regarding temporary use and land-use control.
But hold on now – this event is on a state beach, not a city beach. This event is being promoted by Premiere Media Group, the state of California and the nonprofit Giving It Back to Kids. The promoters have acquired all of the proper permits, and worked with police in setting the event up. One peace officer has gone on record saying that “All safety precautions and permits are in process,” and “Everything to make sure that everybody is content and that the event is as safe and successful as possible has been put into play or is currently being put into play,” according to Be the Rave.
State Parks officials say they handle more than 1,600 events each year. There will be 25 state police officers at Wet Electric, in addition to the 90 private security guards at the event. “We have worked with various agencies to ensure the Wet Electric Music Festival event is well staffed, and we have action plans for any and all issues which could arise,” said Vicky Waters with California State Parks, according to KABC News.
What a world we live in. The Democrats have gone from hanging out at Woodstock to trying to shut down legally permitted events – at a time that our Democratic President, Barack Obama, is spying on all of us and trying to start more wars. It is clearer than ever that today’s Democratic Party is not the party of liberty – not even close.
