They just can’t help themselves. Mission Viejo Councilman Frank Ury – a truly despicable and compromised development hack and favorite of the usual OC special interests, and Diane Harkey, whose husband Dan was ordered this week to pay $4.5 million to dozens of investors for breach of fiduciary duty and breach of contract, are both showing an interest in running for the O.C. Supervisorial seat held by Pat Bates, who is termed out, according to the O.C. Register.
The Register just loves Ury. Apparently they appreciate his commitment to over-developing Mission Viejo. But do the residents of that city appreciate the horrible traffic that Ury’s developments have created? To back all this development when we have no extra water and an energy shortage is just plain irresponsible.

So where do we start in summarizing the awful Ury? Here is a rundown of his “highlights:”
- A Superior Court judge ruled in April, 2010, that Councilman Frank Ury provided false or misleading information in an official ballot statement. Ury had been designated by the City Council in February to submit a written statement opposing Measure D, known as the Right To Vote Amendment. The Judge struck a statement by Ury which would have told voters that state law prevented housing from ever being constructed on the Casta del Sol Golf Course. Schlicht argued no such state law existed, and alleged a portion of the golf course was not in a flood control channel nor in the dam inundation area below Lake Mission Viejo. Judge Rodriguez also found the Councilman false or misleading when Ury stated businesses wishing to expand would have to go to a full vote of the people at their own expense under Measure D. Strike three against Ury came when the court found it false or misleading to say taxpayers would be “forced” to pay for any subsidized housing approved for Mission Viejo. (Mission Viejo Patch)
- In 2012, Ury received $5,000 from UDR, a realtor that has been approved to demolish the former K-Mart building in order to build 320 apartments on Los Alisos. (Mission Viejo Patch)
- Ury was endorsed by the hacks at the Orange County Business Council in 2012. They gushed about him thusly: He serves as the City’s representative for the Foothill/Eastern Transportation Corridor Agency (TCA), the Transportation Corridor System, the League of California Cities (LOCC), and the Association of California Cities-Orange County (ACC-OC). Mayor Ury is also the alternate for the Orange County Council of Governments (OCCOG) and for the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG). Those are all even more reasons to oppose Ury!
- You can also read all about Ury’s past transgressions over at the Orange Juice blog, where our friend Larry Gilbert spent several years writing about Ury and Mission Viejo politics. Example – Ury lied on his 2008 campaign statement. Ury also promoted Wi-Fi service at the Mission Viejo City Hall but did not tell anyone that his firm provides Wi-Fi services. That is called a conflict of interest.
Ury versus Harkey would be hilarious as they are both terrible!
