The Building – Front entrance to 770 L Street in Sacramento
One year ago on July 2, 2012, the Libertarian Party of California opened its headquarters in Sacramento, making a bold move from it’s long-time office in Los Angeles.
The building, 770 L Street, is a clean, modern, marble-faced structure with 14 floors. It’s set among other tall glass-and-steel buildings that front on the mall west of the Capitol, which runs onto the Golden Spike Bridge that crosses the Sacramento River into charming Old Sacramento. The neighborhood blends Sacramento’s history with its future.
So, does being in such close proximity to the Capitol add up to a more effective LPC, one that fulfills our purposes? Consider what we’ve done in the past year that we haven’t done in recent memory.
LPC’s outreach to California’s legislature began the very day after the Party moved into its Sacramento office. The Party’s chairman addressed a state Senate committee to oppose a bill, which was passed by the Committee and the Legislature, but ultimately vetoed by the Governor.

Some comments we’ve received:
“We’re surprised to see you in the Capitol”
“We’re happy to have you here.”

We’ve notified Senators and Assembly members about our position on bills, met them face-to-face to explain our positions, and even sent newly-trained advocates into the Capitol to meet our elected representatives.
Although the media has traditionally ignored LPC’s activities, the Sacramento Bee announced our arrival in an article.

Just as our Party has started to demonstrate political ambition, we’ve enjoyed the helpful attention of several ambitious interns. Some of them have been working directly on Party activities, while others have gone on to work with legislative staffs.
We capped our first year in Sacramento with an annual convention in April after a multi-year absence from the city, with great success.
Never before has the LPC enjoyed this level of access to state government and we’ve already made good on our promise to use our relocation to our advantage.
So, we’re here and we’ve shown that we know what to do. Our arrival has already affected political decisions in and around the Capitol. The question now after a year’s worth of activity and accomplishments is this: do we have the staying power to build on this foundation and restore liberty in California?
