Visibility Brings Potential Backlash
OC Human Relations Releases the 2012 Hate Crime Report at 10am, Thursday, May 23rd
The 2012 Orange County Hate Crime Report shows a considerable increase in hate crimes targeting people perceived to be part of the LGBT community over the prior year. “As members of our community are willing to be more visible, we know that there are also more acts of hate in response. We hope that the rise in this year’s numbers reflects, not only, this trend but also the increased impact of the efforts of centers like ours and others to encourage reporting within the LGBT community,” said David Bishop Director of the UCI Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Resource Center.
As a whole, hate crime in Orange County was down in 2012. As OC Human Relations prepares to release the 2012 Report on Hate Crimes, it is important to recognize that each of the hate crimes and incidents included in the report represents one of our neighbors who was targeted simply because of some aspect of their being – their ethnicity, religion, race, sexual orientation or ability.
Please join OC Human Relations at our annual Hate Crime Network meeting featuring a panel discussion at 10:00am on Thursday, May 23rd as we examine the report and discuss the implications to our community.
Hate Crime Network Meeting location:
OC Human Relations
1300 S. Grand Ave., Bldg. B, Conf. Room A/B

The report will be posted to the OC Human Relations website, as are previous reports.
