The Project Labor Agreement (PLA) that was proposed for Coast Colleges’ $698M Measure M bond projects was defeated tonight! This is a huge victory for the taxpayers.
The Newport Mesa Tea Party Patriots announced their opposition to this PLA earlier in the week. A board-appointed task force has recommended against it, but two out of the five board have voiced their support, according to the Daily Pilot.
OC Political has reported that Trustees Jerry Patterson and and Jim Moreno were the Democrats on the Board who voted for the PLA. The Trustees who voted against the PLA were Prinsky, Grant and Hornbuckle. Moreno reportedly wants to run for Supervisor John Moorlach’s seat in 2014. He may have doomed his chances with this ill-advised vote.
Project Labor Agreements increase project costs 13% to 15% according to a 2011 report by the National University Institute for Policy Research. The Institute studied 551 California school projects from 1995-2009. 13% to 15% is a $100 million increase to Coast Colleges building projects.
