HB Independent columnist and author Chris Epting‘s published another terrific column this morning on his recent experience with the AQMD Board and their arbitrary move to ban fire rings from southern California beaches: In the Pipeline – AQMD isn’t listening to Huntington Beach. The issue is especially acute for HB as they were completely blindsided by the proposed ban, have no homes at the beach to be affected by any smoke and stand to lose some significant revenue from retail and parking.
Epting’s also to be credited with photo up top that we blatantly grabbed from the Independent’s web page. He writes an informative account of his comments to a recent AQMD meeting — in part,
These people seem clueless in dealing with the public. They berate us. They bully us. They ignore us. Yet I’m the one that has the Sargent at Arms has poised behind him just in case I go too far. I told Yates how dissatisfied so many of us are with their process. His reply? “You are an angry gentlemen aren’t you?” That’s how they dismiss people like you and me. Just call us angry. We are the irrational public.
In my opinion, the AQMD had no intention at all of notifying our city this was going to happen. They wanted to just push this through under the radar (remember, we found out by accident). But guess what? We found out and we are fighting back and they’re not used to people fighting back and getting in their face. That’s what I learned Friday. God forbid a concerned citizen look them in the eye and tell them we don’t trust them based on their behavior. God forbid we ask for simple answers, like why the rush and why the lack of transparency?
I’ve met Epting, and he’s not the type that needs a uniformed thug threatening his free speech. He’s reacting as any of us might in front of this collection of officious creeps. The picture says it all.
William Burke’s background is particularly troubling (here’s his own list of
accomplishments) — it looks like he’s made his career in bureaucracy, stepping on property and civil rights, promoting the global warming/climate change/green technology hoax and specializing in public service nannyism — he’s also married to one of LA County’s more obnoxious liberal Democrats, Yvonne Brathwaite Burke, and that partly explains his method acting as the AQMD Governing Board Chairman. Brathwaite Burke was famous for living in Brentwood rather than the LA County Supervisorial District she represented as she said her condo was being remodeled.
HB is really getting hosed on this issue, but we’re not seeing a lot of reaction out of its seven-member City Council other than Mayor Connie Boardman speaking at a recent AQMD hearing. The controversy has been continued to a May 3rd AQMD meeting in Diamond Bar which will allow for more organization that seems to be growing to oppose the AQMD’s action. Epting’s told me that Boardman suggested that Burke come to HB and be heard, but “Burke shot Connie down pretty hard”.
Epting’s Facebook page is Save the Southern California Beach Bonfires!.
We don’t know if AQMD meetings are streamed. One suggestion we’d have, which would surely be rejected for getting too close to the folks who are most affected by this arbitrary and senseless ruling, would be to invite Burke and his assistant nannies to have their meeting in the HB City Council Chamber which can accommodate a large crowd and has the video equipment to televise, record and stream it.
