The new Irvine City Council majority is quickly moving to take control of the disaster that has been the Orange County Great Park, as related by the O.C. Register. To wit:
- Councilman Jeff Lalloway on Monday called for an end to public relations and lobbying contracts worth up to $1.1 million annually.
- Councilwoman Christina Shea asked for a forensic audit of what’s been spent on the park so far and what money is remaining.
- Mayor Steven Choi suggested that only elected Irvine Council members should be members of the Great Park board of directors, doing away with the seats for four independent members.
Predictably the other Council Members, Beth Krom and Larry Agran, are crying foul. They say an audit is not necessary. They must surely be afraid of what that audit is going to turn up.
We know already that Agran used Great Park money to buy off consultants left and right and over the years they lined up to donate to Political Action Committees that supported Agran and his cronies via independent expenditures. It was quite a scam.
By dumping those on the Great Park board who have no vested interest in Irvine, Mayor Choi is doing the right thing for his constituents. And this will at last stop Agran from pulling any more Great Park shenanigans.
So far the new Irvine Council majority is making all the right moves! It is too bad that Agran and Krom are choosing to keep laying it on thick instead of coming clean about what they did when they ran Irvine and the Great Park. The truth will come out and I suspect it will not be pretty.
