A new article in the O.C. Register debunks the myth, often propagated by Irvine Council Members Larry Agran, Beth Krom and Sukhee Kang, that Irvine is the safest city in America.
“Among cities with populations greater than 75,000, Irvine’s violent crime rate was the fifth lowest. Fishers, Ind., a northern suburb of Indianapolis, had the top spot, with 1.4 violent crimes per 10,000 residents,” according to the O.C. Register.
A few more nuggets worth considering:
The FBI’s warnings aside, Irvine also didn’t have the lowest property crime rate or combined violent and property crime rate in 2011. Irvine only reported the lowest violent crime rate among the cities.
Seven big cities – five of them in California – reported lower property crime rates than Irvine in 2011. The California cities were Simi Valley, Sunnyvale, Thousand Oaks, Murrieta and Santa Clarita.
