Former Fullerton City Councilwoman Jan Flory, a Democrat and a lawyer, defeated short-time incumbent Travis Kiger by just 29 votes, in the Nov. 6 election, according to the Voice of OC. I found out today that Kiger won’t be challenging the election results.
I was at the Orange County Voter Registrar’s office this afternoon when I ran into my good friend Tony Bushala, who helped to recall a trio of RINOs (Republicans in Name Only) after the murder of Kelly Thomas by several bad Fullerton cops. The OC Weekly later named him the “Best Gadfly.” I think he’s just a great human being! Bushala was at the Registrar’s office today with our mutual friend, Chris Thompson, to talk to the Registrar, Neal Kelley, about the Fullerton election results.
Bushala figured the recount would cost more than $20,000. As much as I hate to see Kiger lose, I had to agree with Bushala that the cost wasn’t worth it as there was no assurance that the results would change with a recount.
This loss is a real shame. The OC Weekly named Kiger the “Best New Public Official in Orange County.” They were right about that. The fact that he is being replaced by a liberal Democrat is just salt in the wound.
But you know what? Kiger will be fine. He has a beautiful family and a great job. He will continue to make a difference in Fullerton, just not on the City Council. I wish him the best.
As for Flory, the downside for her is that now the guys at the Friends for Fullerton’s Future blog will have even more material to write about as she is certain to be a real train wreck.
Speaking of material, Bushala told me that the good old boys at the Fullerton Police Department packed all the City Council meetings for months during the campaign season – and gave out free t-shirts and Tommy burgers to those who voiced support for them. Imagine that? The dumb voters were bought off by burgers and swag.
It is true what they say – we end up with the government we deserve.
The cops can’t buy off people like Bushala did and does? Come on. Fair game baby. Congrats to Flory. Kiger would have ruined Fullerton. The future is bright with this council and Kiger gone. Time to celebrate!
