“Councilman Steven Choi defeated Councilman Agran 45.5 percent to 40.8 percent, according to unofficial results from Orange County Registrar of Voters. Agran will remain on the council to finish a four-year term,” according to the O.C. Register.
The Republicans now control the Irvine City Council, but their leader, Council Member Jeff Lalloway, is not a combative guy. He is already saying the right things – indicating that his Council majority will be happy to work with Agran and Beth Krom.
What could get real interesting is what the new Council majority will find when they start to unravel what happened to the millions of dollars that Krom and Agran blew on the Great Park, with so little to show for it.
So why did Agran lose? I have already posited that Agran overreached by putting Katherine Daigle in the Mayor’s race. She ended up taking votes away from him, not from Choi. Beyond that, I think the people of Irvine got tired of Agran’s acrimony and underhanded politics, plus his tendency to use public funds to win favors. And the Republicans stuck together, for once.
Although Agran lost, Krom was the top vote-getter in the Council race. That makes sense. She is nowhere near as pugnacious as Agran. Folks respect her. Hopefully she will learn to work with the new Republican majority. Now is not the time for her and Agran to get bitter. There is much work ahead as the Council has the Great Park mess to resolve and a budget crisis is surely looming on the horizon as the Great Park’s bonds come due.
Kudos to Choi, Shea and Schott. They have suffered a lot as the Agranistas have attacked them, often in shameful ways. I know that Choi will be a great Mayor for his beloved City of Irvine!
