FORMER CALIFORNIA REPUBLICAN PARTY CHAIRMAN
MOVES TO THE TRAVIS ALLEN CAMPAIGN
ORANGE, Calif. – Former California Republican Party Chairman, Mike Schroeder, endorsed Troy Edgar for Assembly in January of 2012. Today, Schroeder announced that had changed:
“After careful consideration, I have decided to withdraw my endorsement of Troy Edgar and to endorse Travis Allen.
This is not a decision I made lightly. I have never dual endorsed or moved off an endorsement in my life.
There were three factors in this decision. First, Troy Edgar stated that he would take the no new tax pledge when I endorsed him, but he refuses to sign it. His opponent, Travis Allen, who was not a candidate when I endorsed Edgar, has signed the no tax pledge and has made this the number one issue in his campaign. Republicans who refuse to sign the no new taxes pledge have a sorry history of providing the final vote that the Democrats need when the Legislature raises our taxes.
Second, Troy Edgar has recently supported tax increases in Los Alamitos where he serves as Mayor. Edgar has been criticized by most editorial writers for doing so.
Third, Edgar was caught violating the campaign finance laws in his abortive Congressional race. He was caught having his corporation illegally pay campaign expenses that were not reported as required by law. When caught, he simply reported the expenditure as a campaign “debt”. This makes his violations worse, not better. There is no such “debt” because the printers in this case were already illegally paid by his corporation. The only “debt” would be to repay his corporation for its illegal expenditures, something Edgar refuses to do, even after being caught.
During this time, I have come to know Travis Allen and believe he would best represent us and best protect the taxpayers from the predators of our Democratic Legislature”.
