“With officer-involved shootings and angry protests in Anaheim exposing its race and class divisions across national and international headlines, Duane Roberts feels that the timing is right to make a bid for city council. In taking the first step, the local activist pulled papers yesterday and has until the end of the week to gather all the necessary signatures from registered voters,” according to the OC Weekly.
This is great news for the people of Anaheim, even if Roberts does not win. As a candidate he will get the issues out and that alone is a huge victory.
Roberts is a member of the Green Party and he blogs at the Orange Juice blog. I recruited him as a blogger when I was the publisher at the OJ blog. Here is a message Roberts posted on his Facebook page, about his campaign:
URGENT APPEAL FROM DUANE ROBERTS REGARDING POSSIBLE RUN FOR ANAHEIM CITY COUNCIL
Dear Greens and fellow Progressives:
As a longtime resident of Anaheim, I have recently been approached by a number of people who want me to run for a seat on the City Council. I still am somewhat ambivalent about doing this, but I might take the plunge if I find that sufficient support is there.
The deadline for collecting signatures is Friday, August 10th and time is short. I’d have to pull papers this coming Monday to get the ball rolling. To be considered a legitimate candidate, I will also need to purchase a ballot statement which would cost me about $1,000.
Of the candidates that are currently running, none will offer progressive solutions to the problems this city faces. Nobody will be talking about defending the rights of undocumented workers, fighting police brutality, or putting an end to the Walt Disney Company’s reign over city hall.
I’d like to make it perfectly clear that if I run, I will run a positive campaign. No mudslinging of opponents and no negative campaigning. In addition, I will speak the truth. I guarantee you that I will address issues in a way that no other candidate will dare speak about openly.
I can collect signatures from any Anaheim resident who is registered to vote. You need not be a member of the Green Party to sign my paperwork.
The question is: do you think I should run? If so, will you help get the word out about my campaign? And if you are an Anaheim resident, will you help me gather the signatures I need to qualify for the ballot?
If you may not be aware of who I am, I ran as the Green Party nominee for U.S. Senate in 2010 and earned about 127,854 votes statewide. I’m also a longtime community activist.
