O.C. Register columnist Frank Mickadeit had a cow the other day because the South Orange County Community College District’s Board of Trustees moved to replace his dead pal, Tom Fuentes, the Monday after he departed from this plane of existence, according to a ridiculous column published on June 25.
Apparently Fuentes’ widow, Jolene, and his son, “TJ” asked the Board of Trustees to appoint Mrs. Fuentes to replace her dead husband. Barring that, they asked that no one be appointed until the voters could fill the position at the ballot box, in November.
I guess the Fuentes family and Mickadeit think that the elected SOCCD Trustees serve in hereditary posts. Nope! But here is the rub – Fuentes was himself appointed to replace an SOCCD board member, Steven Frogue, back in 2000, according to Dissent the Blog. No one in Fuentes family or his party, the Republican Party of Orange County, asked the SOCCD Board of Trustees at that time to wait until the next election to fill Frogue’s post. So why is it OK for Mrs. Fuentes to demand that now?
As you might expect, the pro-Fuentes rabble at the OC Political blog (a Republican blog that should never be confused for the independent blog you are reading now) sided with Mrs. Fuentes, in a post written by one of their editors, Chris Nguyen, but that post elicited exactly zero comments! Meanwhile, the Mickadeit post is filled with comments ripping him for what has to be the dumbest columns that he has ever written.
Of course the SOCCD Trustees acted appropriately in replacing Fuentes right away, with an educator, James Wright. If Mrs. Fuentes wants the job she can run against Wright in November. Good luck with that!
Perhaps the O.C. Register’s new owner will finally retire Mickadeit, who has become a giant embarrassment to that paper.
