A few years ago, in one of my weekly columns in the Daily Pilot, I brought the idea of creating a hot spot at Triangle Square. Back then it made sense, and it still makes sense today.
Black night/olive branch pizza has decided to move operations from E. 17th Street to the Triangle inCosta Mesa. Triangle owners chopped off the Square word because, I guess, it sounds too lame or because it isn’t square enough to be called that way.
Now, does it mean that with another restaurant bar the number of drunk people will increase in Costa Mesa? Well, some community activists in the east side think that it will, and they are already making some fuss about it. I’m sure they are promising they will fight back once the project gets to the City Council later this year.
But, a more reasonable answer came from law enforcement authorities. According to a statement attached to the project proposal, the Costa Mesa Police Department believes that “targeted law enforcement areas at the Triangle is not considered excessive or burdensome to law enforcement. The police department does not anticipate elevated rates of alcohol-related crimes.”
I’m sure, conclusions like that of the CMPD are strong enough to persuade city officials to approve the proposal. In Costa Mesa, however, nothing is easy. Commissioners in the Planning Commission during an official meeting on the 23rd had to fight a bit before they wrapped up the issue. Two said Yes, one No another Abstained, and the last on didn’t even showed up.
If nothing strange happens in the City Council later in the Summer, the new restaurant bar will be running, and getting more money to the city. Steve Mesinger and Jim Righeimer are staunch libertarian ideologues. So, more likely they will vote Yes. Gary Monahan owns a pub in the Eastside. A restaurant bar in the Triangle won’t compromise his business profits. He’ll say Bueno. I suppose Wendy Leece might say No. We don’t know what’s in Eric Bever’s head. But, in the end, we don’t care what he thinks. 3 against 2 is good news for the new restaurant bar owner. A new bar it is. Let’s hope the next one is a Salsa or Merenge night club.
