Brenda McCune, a Republican blogger at OC Political who ran for the Yorba Linda City Council in 2010 (came in fourth but spent the most), is reporting that the Yorba Linda City Council has voted to begin a new police contract with the Orange County Sheriff’s office.
I reported awhile ago that the Yorba Linda City Council did the right thing by cancelling their contract with the Brea Police, after years of steep increases in cost from the Brea P.D.
The cost of the Brea police contract had increased by nearly 68 percent in the past decade, double the rate of inflation during the same period! Yorba Linda’s police costs had almost doubled since 2001/2001, shooting up from $6.5 million to $11 million. Yorba Linda’s police costs made up 41% of their total city budget.
Under those circumstances you really can’t blame the Yorba Linda City Council majority for looking elsewhere for their police services. McCune however does. Well, the voters overwhelmingly rejected her in 2010, so feel free to disregard her constant prattling about this issue.
You should also have a look at the City of Yorba Linda’s crime statistics, which reveal that just about every category of crime has gone down in their city- in fact they have had only 5 homicides since 2006, and only one since 2009. What in the world are the Brea police groupies having such a cow about? Their city is about as safe as could be – and will likely stay that way no matter which police department ends up serving them.
The new contract with the O.C.S.D. is supposedly going to save the City of Yorba Linda a million a year. Wow! They are lucky to have a City Council majority that can roll up their sleeves and get things done, despite the constant attacks from council gadflys and unsuccessful Council candidates.
